Reason: If someone hasn't followed you, Instagram will keep showing them your content on explore and you will show up on Suggested-For-You lists. So they constantly see you and remember you even if they don't follow you.
But the moment they follow you, they won't see your content on explore or you on SFYs. And if you ignore them and they ignore your content too, they'll soon stop seeing your content on the home feed. Your stories will also be pushed to the back.
Now they have no way of seeing you, in a few days they will forget you.
This is a big mistake many make!
